International Women’s Day | Charlotte’s Story
From an early age, I had always described me as strong willed by my family and working within the legal profession with the ultimate goal of qualifying as a solicitor long being an aspiration of mine.
I’d say that I felt sure about pursuing a career in law was when I was in Year 7 of secondary school. I applied to be on the school’s mooting team and continued to take part in the competition in the following years. The preparation for the competition’s mock scenario, involving research, drafting skeleton arguments and short speeches, in addition to experience vocalising the arguments as an advocate in a courtroom solidified my interest in the law. When speaking in the courtroom, I found a new sense of confidence – that was the moment I felt sure about pursuing the legal route.
My family have always been supportive. My grandfather, being my biggest supporter, always encouraged me to push myself and to put my all into everything I do. An early memory was on his birthday, having to sit my exams to get into the grammar school and explaining I would make sure I made it happen for him. Growing up, my grandfather knew how passionate I was about pursing law through hoping to qualify as a solicitor, and was extremely supportive. Unfortunately, 2 years ago I lost him, but I made a promise to him that I would ensure I succeed. That remains a huge source of motivation for me: I am extremely determined to ensure that I keep that promise.
I joined JBL 1 year and 9 months ago, starting my professional career by becoming a paralegal. I have learned a lot so far, from basic IT skills, all the way up to conducting detailed research and preparing complex documents for court. I have also been exposed to a multitude of different areas including but not limited to; building safety, small claims and most recently breach of lease. The firm’s culture creates constant opportunities to learn and progress, and no two days are the same which I find really refreshing.
As this week marks International Women’s Day, I have naturally found myself reflecting on the women at JB Leitch who have paved the way. I feel fortunate to work alongside knowledgeable, hard-working women whose professionalism sets a strong example, and encourages me to continue pushing forward in my own journey.
Outside of work, I like to keep active. I joined a new gym in November and have been really motivated by the new environment. I’m currently preparing for the Liverpool Half Marathon this Sunday, which has been a good challenge to work towards, and will be one ticked off the bucket list when I complete it. Aside from fitness I enjoy baking, and I like to travel when I can, I have done quite a few city breaks recently and therefore am hoping to book a more relaxing beach holiday for this summer.
